Stark Reality

Our society is very cruel towards woman though it's bitter but a stark reality. So many of ladies unfortunately have to face the circumstances of being a lone survivor, sometimes by choice and many times due to husband's demise. Whatever be the reason, our society immediately adopts a rude attitude towards them like a jail warden on duty, and observes every move very very minutely though in any way not supportive yet too eager to watch, comment and of course give mental torments.

I often wonder why our society is doing such a low thing to so called highly respected ladies? Hypocrisy is the name for this duplicate attitude in my dictionary. Though am little bitter, but then truth always is bitter. One of my close friend unfortunately lost her spouse in an accident, as expected she had no option than to work to earn a living for her 2 children. She being educated could find a "decent" job. The colleagues in her office were initially sympathetic then gradually accepted her as a friend. Being a widow, was considered as a cripple by many but she was quite straight forward and hated to take unwanted obligations. She was labelled as "rude" by many but I think she is absolutely right. She considered marrying for a second time due to the pricking looks and silent gestures of many. She got strong opposition in response but without heeding got married and now quite happy with her life.

On the contrary another friend lost his wife, all pressurized him for a second marriage with full support from every angle. As far life is concerned both have full rights to lead a happy life, then why this double standard? Its because we are still mentally slave, yes its 100% true. Slavery is in itself a shame, be physical or mental. We have become independent but in reality we are still slaves of superstitions and our orthodox attitudes.

Just imagine the plight, these single women face day-to-day in our society. In townships people have little broad outlook as they see life closely and face lot more difficulties than average people. If we can not support at least we can be mum so as not to offend any such person.

Its the need of the hour that we change our age old customs and be little more practical in every sense. When we can change our food habits, ways of dressing, opt a job in office, move freely in society and claim to be equivalent, then why not opt a broader outlook towards woman? Is not it a totally narrow minded attitude and also to some extent highly selfish? Think if your sister or any family member facing such a misfortune, what would you do and expect others to do? Be the same what you expect from others, then only we can claim rightfully to be a good human being. I am a strong supporter of ladies rights and really wish our society could support these single women to live happily and enjoy their life as an individual. I hope to see a changed attitude but then what is a society, we only as individuals form a society, why not contribute positively?

We proudly say woman is the backbone of a family, Won't you like to see strong family structures? Let's pledge to be truly supportive individually in such circumstances.....
