How Noble is Teaching?
When I wonder over the present status of teachers, I find myself unable to accept it as the profession is losing respect nowadays drastically. The reason is unquestioningly our increasing bend towards materialistic life, earlier people gave high values to ethics and principles whereas now its not to be seen anywhere at all. Why this sudden change in society? The answer is not sudden its gradual. Our passion for materialistic life is increasing constantly thus making us leave behind the ethics and values. This blind race to earn more and more is never ending and the respectable teachers forgot the fundamental qualities of teaching. Kindness, understanding, charity, affection which unfortunately have replaced partiality, competitiveness, harshness and professionalism.
The average students are ignored totally and only a few are treated well by teachers, to make the situation more worse teachers take tuitions compulsorily which shows the strong bend towards their money minded mentality. If none cares for the average students then certainly we would lose many more bright achievers as all those who inspire us till date have been below average level in studies initially.
The question is why teachers run away behind reducing their responsibilities to minimum? Most of the students can be seen practicing bunch of papers before exams. Teachers don't have any involvement so they just hand over a set of question papers thus succeed in lessening their work brilliantly. A teacher should be able to arouse interest in even poor students and guide them excel.
Our life style has become completely materialistic, none wants to lead a simple life at all. Times have changed and people are judged by their financial status. Right from the Gurukul days teachers and disciples shared a strong bondage of love and respect respectively. Learners had tremendous amount of respect to obey the commands of teachers willingly whereas now we see so many incidents of teachers being humiliated by students. Many teachers also shamelessly indulge in wrong deeds like molestation.
Parents,Teachers and God are considered equal because of the high esteem people have over them. Shouldn't they try to maintain the respect and expectations society has from them? Its highly impossible to get respect just because you teach.
A friend of mine is an officer..one day he insisted on teaching profession being a noble and respect worthy as teachers have the essential powers to shape a child in whichever way they like to, compared to other professions. Really teaching has still much positives but again we must know the extent to which a child should be taken to.
Molding a person is not easy still constant efforts with affection have magical powers to transform a mind. I would love to mention my school teacher who is no more still I remember him and till date have tried to help as many students in studies as possible. He had sown a seed which has now grown up well. He is my inspiration and I bow to him in reverence.
I was in 5th std. My father was severely ill for 3 years thus due to constant treatment we suffered financially and being 5 school going children we had to discontinue studies. He was the Principal in school. He noticed our absence in classes and came home for meeting us. When my mother told him the situation, he promised to take care of 5 of us as we studied in the same school and topped in classes. He took the entire responsibilities for the coming 2 years and never even showed any sign of it.
Even after nearly 38 years on remembrance my eyes get wet. I am a teacher and as a token of respect to my teacher I help my students in whichever possible way I can. His timely help not only saved our year, also set a live example of genuineness in practicality. We meet many people who promise profusely but how many of do it counts!
Hats off to such teachers who set an example for others! Still some teachers have the genuine qualities to motivate tender minds for betterment and upliftment. If a teacher is able to arouse interest in studies and make the subject interesting believe my words many students would choose teaching as profession and also would teach well. The number of drop outs from schools would vanish.
Teaching is an extraordinarily noble job and if intelligent candidates opt it certainly not a single student can be labelled as average. God has gifted us brain and surprisingly its efficiency never decreases yet we fear to use it to the fullest. I kindly request all my friends to consider the average students and identify their problems. The aim of imparting Teacher training should be at least given little value.
