Be On Vigil
Play time is the best time for children as well mothers. Till our children are young we need not worry much but as and when they start making round on their own, the risk for mothers starts. They are in highly adventurous mood while on play and we generally underestimate their intellect.
You know what happened one day? My 3 year old daughter decided to do something new and was exploring around the backyard if she could get anything interesting. After some time I got engrossed in my household schedules and completely forgot children. My elder son was riding a small bicycle with younger sister.
After some time they were tired and came back. I observed small reddish droplets around her mouth and suspecting she would have hurt herself touched lightly but it was not blood. Then? My heart thumped fast in panic, I could not guess and besides a 3 year old can't tell everything accurately. If I asked angrily she would lie out of fear so I asked her gently, 'my dear whats that you tasted? See around your mouth red color is there, its smelling too good. Show what you drank. To my utter surprise she took me enthusiastically to a spot where all the old and broken things were disposed. She took a small bottle and opened it triumphantly, see ma its so tasty!
When I took and checked I could barely control myself as the medicine was expired cough syrup. My entire self trembled thinking all the possible sequences. None was at home, being a village it was not easy task to take her to a doctor. I took the bottle and sped towards the doctor. After handing over the bottle and telling her the happenings I could not control myself in the fear of losing my baby.
The doctor gave antibiotic injections. After 2 days her lips had a dry coating like we have on wounds. I was horrified thinking what would have happened to the inner organs! For 2 months I gave her all sorts of cooling items like butter milk, tender coconut, leafy greens and ghee to reduce the effects. Now also on the thought I shudder. What would have happened if I lacked little practical sense that moment. Especially mothers should be on vigil when children are playing around. One more incident...All the children were playing in the summer leave after lunch and as usual ladies were taking rest at home. In the nearby area a channel for irrigation purpose was full of water. A child of 7 years distracted from the group went towards the channel. On seeing water flow he was excited and went little closer, suddenly he fell down and as none went that side no one thought to check also. After the play time children dispersed, on getting late little alarmed ladies checked with the children but none gave any proper information about him. At the twilight hour a person who took a herd of cows informed them and on checking the child was found drowned in the channel.
A toddler has been making rounds of the room playing with the toys and the mother listening to his pleasant utterance busy in household chores, completely forgot to lock the bathroom door. The child in his adventurous mood enjoyed balancing somehow his small steps loved walking around very much. His gurgles pleased mother beyond limit. Suddenly he saw a bucket full of water in the bathroom. Thrilled at the sight of water he sneaked in and enjoyed splashing happily. Suddenly lost balance and fell into the bucket head downwards. For some time when the mother didn't hear any sound came little surprised over the silence found her dear baby dead.
In our area new construction was going on. Building work was incomplete, thus everywhere sand, bricks, stones of various size were heaped and it was a normal sight for the area people. Septic tank also was under construction. Sudden rain stopped the construction work and no one came for ten days to the site. Children as usually happens enjoyed playing hide and seek. A child sat with his legs hanging down over the border of the half constructed septic tank. The rainy water filled the tank to some extent. After the play children left for home. As it grew dark and a child didn't reach home the mother inquired in the neighbor but could not get accurate idea. The area became dark so searching delayed. Almost after searching everywhere disappointed parents could not control their frustration and cried helplessly cursing each other in extreme agony. A watchman who was probably on rounds waved his hand and gestured towards the open half constructed septic tank. With bated breath the parents fearing all the negatives praying went and to their utter disappointment found the body of their son floating in the tank.
In villages we use firewood stove and to lit use little kerosene its quite common. Whenever I cooked my daughter observed me and one day when I was not around tried to do my role. Kept the wood in stove, poured kerosene ant lit it confidently. Within no time the thatched roof caught fire and burned rapidly into flames. When I noticed fumes I ran to the spot fearing all sorts of imaginary things, was but relieved to see children safe. My daughter clung tight to me in fear and said innocently that she tried to help me in cooking. I thanked my stars for saving my child from any big troubles.
Little carelessness can cause great hazards sometimes but unfortunately our attention never goes there. We tend to underestimate our children and end up in great troubles many a times.
